The eighth generation of the Volkswagen Passat has just been unveiled – due to premier at the Paris Motor Show in October. Further details and pricing are to be expected around Autumn, with sales starting before the end of the year and first deliveries in early 2015. The Passat name has been around for 41 years, and over its lifetime has sales of 23 million worldwide.
The all-new Passat features brand-new design, technologies, and engines. Fuel economy is said to have been improved by up to 20 per cent with the new engines, including a plug-in hybrid option, and an overall reduced weight of up to 85 kg. The hybrid model has the capability to travel up to 31 miles on battery power alone, with a total range of 600 miles.
The new engine orientation allows a set back cabin which creates the effect of a premium-look vehicle. The front grille features four chrome bars which wrap around the front of the car and blend into the headlights, continuing the premium class appearance.
At the rear, the tail lights have been redesigned, too. A new cleaner, and slimmer look which on the saloon, alludes to the Volkswagen Phaeton. All new Passat models have LED rear lights, and headlights are either halogen or LED. The optional Dynamic Light Assist, automatically adjusts the beam for maximum road illumination, without dazzling other traffic.
The interior of the new Passat is also all-new, matching the new, sophisticated exterior. Behind the steering wheel, is an Active Info Display, replacing the instrument cluster from the prior model. This features a 12.3-inch TFT display. A heads-up display is also a feature of the new Passat. The latest generation of Volkswagen Park Assist allows the car to forwards park itself into perpendicular spaces.
Safety technology is second-to-none, including; Side Assist with Rear Traffic Alert; Traffic Jam Assist; Emergency Assist, which can halt a vehicle when the driver is incapacitated; and the latest Front Assist system, with City Emergency Braking, which combines radar and camera sensors to detect pedestrians.
The flagship of the new Passat model range is a 2 litre, bi-turbo diesel motor, producing 240 hp and 369 lb ft. This engine will be combined with a seven-speed DSG and 4MOTION drivetrain.
