The ultimate Peugeot 308 has just been announced – boasting supercar thrills, in a family hatchback.
With a combined power output of 500 bhp and four-wheel drive, the new Peugeot 308 R Hybrid can reach 62 mph from a standing start in four seconds, flat.
Bruno Famin, Director at Peugeot Sport, said: “The high-performance hybrid powertrain fitted to the 308 gives a glimpse of the potential for ultra-sports models in the future.”
Peugeot Sport engineers have equipped the 308 R HYbrid with four driving modes:
- Hot Lap mode – utilises petrol engine, front & rear electric motors, making 500 bhp and 538 lb ft;
- Track mode – 400 bhp and 390 lb ft with petrol engine and rear electric motor, the front electric motor acts as an additional boost for acceleration;
- Road mode – designed for road use, with 300 bhp and 295 lb ft. The petrol engine is used here, with the rear electric motor assisting acceleration. The front electric motor is redundant in this setting;
- ZEV – rear electric motor is prioritised, with the front motor coming into play, depending on pressure applied to accelerator pedal.
Taming the tremendous power output are huge 380 mm ventilated rotors on the front axle, anchored by four-pot callipers, and 290 mm discs at the rear – these are not always used, though. The electric motors have been engineered to use an engine braking system where the driver will use deceleration as opposed to braking, from 155 mph. This saves disc and pad wear, while the regenerative braking charges the battery.
Externally, styling cues such as: widened front and rear tracks by 80 mm, wide rubber on all four corners, bonnet louvres, and chequered pattern grille which allows ample cooling for the 500 bhp powertrain.
The unique paintwork winks at the heritage of blue French competition vehicles, while the matte black covering the rear quarter highlights the clean lines of the car. Also at the rear, there is a narrow spoiler topping the tailgate and twin air scoops in the rear bumper to aid battery cooling.
Although the interior may have similarities to the standard 308, this is solely based on ergonomics and instrumentation. The 308 R HYbrid has four individual sports seats, upholstered in fawn-coloured leather. There are flashes of red throughout, with particular attention to the dials, steering wheel centre mark, and centre console.
