The Porsche 718 Boxster S was announced at the start of 2016 with the news that two cylinders would be taken away. In the place of a 3.4 litre flat-six would sit a 2.5 litre turbocharged flat-four. David Errington gives us his thoughts.
The Gen 2 991 Porsche 911 Carrera caused a little bit of a stir when it was announced in 2015. Both the Carrera and Carrera S models would have their engine capacities cut to 3 litres and become turbocharged. So the non 911 Turbo is now turbocharged. Die-hard Porsche fans winced and I must admit, I was uncertain – but why? Why don’t people trust the manufacturer who have been evolving their flagship model for over half a century? It’s as if they think they know better. This is why they’re wrong.
The day started at 6am, opening the curtains of the hotel room to a Star Wars style skyline as the sun emerged from the horizon, bearing down on Jack Frost who has laid his blanket on the surrounding fields, overnight.
As I headed to my car with bags in tow, knots of excitement worked their way around my abdomen, for I knew in a few hours I would be sat behind the steering wheel of arguably the most desirable sports cars of today.
After having keyed in the post-code for my destination, the sat-nav directed me through a number of sleepy villages until I arrived at Silverstone. I approached the gates and was greeted by the security guard who gestured me to the right. After driving slowly past Hanger Straight and approaching Stowe corner, the Porsche Experience Centre Silverstone became clearly visible.
An arrangement of cars were present in the car park, covered with a thin film of frost and a few drops of frozen condensation on the glass. I lost myself for a few moments, in awe at the silent thrum of the varying capacity of flat-six engines. Continue reading “Porsche 911 GT3 RS”

Precious few manufacturers are able to market a product line which has stuck to the same mission statement for the last 40+ years. In fact, only two spring immediately to mind, and both are equally iconic. One is Porsche and the 911, and the other is the Ranger Rover.
Initially surprised by the concept of a 5-door MINI (or would that be LARGE?) Cooper, it was great to try out the new, more practical version of the hugely popular hatchback.
Not only were there two extra doors in the shell, a diesel version of the Cooper S motor was hiding under the bonnet, coupled to a six-speed Steptronic gearbox. The whole package is not like MINI of old and I was keen to try it.
